In Jordy Pollock’s Wabi Sabi Rendezvous, old school friends Monika and Yael find themselves sharing a series of sun-dappled rendezvous as they contemplate heartbreak, art and the mysterious workings of fate. A simultaneously mundane and cosmic ode to old friendships and young love, Pollock’s film transposes the metaphysical conundrums of Hong Sang-Soo and the observational precision of Eric Rohmer to Adelaide’s own beautifully banal Botanic Gardens, and in the process creates a cinematic language all its own. The inarguable highpoint of the 2024 Adelaide Film Festival, Pollock’s microbudget opus is a rallying cry for free-wheeling film fun on the streets of our town.
